(Re)Design Death Virtual Exhibition

On display at the Cube design museum from February 10, 2020 through January 24th 2021, the (Re)Design Death Exhibit focuses on designing solutions from deathcare to burial. It is said that the project “features contemporary design around the central themes of saying farewell, dying, mourning and remembering” and displayed concepts from 40 different designers.
When you enter the tour you will begin by viewing the 2012 End of Life Care Machine designed by Dan Chen to give comfort to someone who is actively dying. The device is essentially a bedside robot that is triggered by medical indications of a person’s last moments of life. This robot speaks to you reassuringly and rubs your arm. While it does sound nice to be comforted during your transition to death, it sparks lots of ethical questions. Isn’t a person still alone if they are not with another human? Does it simply enable those who are living to forget about the dying? Does it continue to take us even farther from the process of death and dying?
Another exhibit that may catch your eye is Die Fabulously by Jingle Yu. He encourages his LGBT comrades to choose their final burial garments especially if they are different than their families would choose or your typical heteronormative funeral attire. In his display, he shows vibrant and festive body bags as a way to make this point.
And of course the gorgeous Capsula Mundi display is sure to captivate you. The egg shaped burial pod with a tree growing from the top is such a lovely, eco-friendly, and life-giving way to go. Who doesn’t want to live on as a beautiful tree? Read more about the Capsula Mundi burial pod [LINK] in another one of our posts.
